If you work from home or run a business from home always ensure that your home insurer is aware of the nature of the work.
Each insurance company will have a different view of the risk presented by working from home or if you run a business from home.
Some home insurance policies will actually give cover for home working equipment and there would be usually be a limit stated under the policy. The items covered would be laptops, desks, printers, telephones etc and would normally be aimed at the person who is working from home and where the work is of a clerical nature.
If the work from home means that customers or suppliers would visit your home then the insurance company would need full details and may not wish to provide cover.
Business stock would also not normally be covered and would require a separate policy to be in force.
The insurer may cover you provided that there is a separate business policy in force covering the business and the Public Liability risk.
Depending on the nature of the work or business, it may be that you would require a specific policy aimed at people working from home.
The main point is to always advise the insurer of the nature of the work and this will keep you right.
